The triple jump is so nice to land trying to get that flagpole 1-UP and I can barely even remember 2D Mario without the ground pound. The New Super Mario games made the controls feel exactly how you would expect the godsend that are Mario’s 3D to feel in 2D. Mario’s controls could use some improving, but are still excellent. Sure it’s nothing in comparison to Mario Kart 8, but is great nonetheless.
The first underground level with the crystal moving blocks just couldn’t have possibly looked any better, the water levels that aren’t actually underwater are some of the most beautiful Mario levels I’ve ever seen, that one level that’s a painting, this list goes on and on. 2D Mario has never looked this good before. The brand new HD graphics are absolutely splendid. It’s just such a blast to play this game with your friends. You can work cooperatively with your friends to complete levels easier or make it five times harder by fighting your friends all the way to the finish to see who can finish the game with the most lives. The multiplayer is so much fun in this game. The Star Coins are all hiding or require skilled jumps to reach. The levels are crafted in a way that makes it not too easy, but not frustratingly difficult either. Platforming is what Mario is all about, and these levels make the platforming the most fun I’ve played in a long time. There’s not really a way to make it NOT linear. The mini games featured in Super Mario 64 DS have been included and improved upon for multiplayer action. Do battle against Luigi (or Mario) as long as you have a friend and a second DS. Additionally, aside from the normal coins that Mario can collect for 1-ups, you can find three giant coins on each level which can be used to purchase entrance to other places in the game.įinally, I would like to mention that this game features a decent multiplayer mode for both single game and dual game cartridge competition. And while the touch screen is all but barely used, I didn't mind at all, simply because the game is such a pleasure to play. The levels are varied just like any other Mario game you have played, but the ability to go any direction in order to go back on the level and pick up items you may have missed is a welcome addition. Sure the Koopas and Goombas seem to look the same, but there is a certain familiarity that is almost reassuring. The colors of the strange looking worlds seem to really explode with bright hues. For one thing, I felt that Mario moved with a more fluid pacing, running more like a real person might run. The graphics on the DS are a step up from the original Nintendo's (for good reason) and I appreciated the subtle improvements. You can also hear much of the iconic audio from the original Super Mario Bros.
While the game is new, it pays close attention to past Mario games such as the original Super Mario Bros, and improves on it while still maintaining the classic feel.įor example, while the animations still have that super simplistic look, the animations themselves are super smooth and more detailed compared to older games.

Improved but still a classicįans of the original series will greatly appreciate the Wii remake. The hub for the different levels is very similar to games of the past, and anyone who has ever played a Super Mario game should find themselves operating it easily enough. This helps make use of the remote’s technology, and makes the game a little less like a standard Mario game and a bit more like it’s own Wii game.
You’ll also need to shake the remote to help get objects or to perform a spin jump. The wii remote also offers some new aspects to gameplay, including using the tilt feature of the remote for certain platforms.
Coin Battle is particularly fun, with players racing to collect more coins than other players before the time is up. The game also includes a Free-for-All mode and a Coin-Battle mode with others. It’s a fun new twist either way, and definitely worth trying out. Multiple people make some parts of the level easier, but can also make some parts harder. Multiplayer is optional, but when you select it you and up to three other players can tackle a level together.
